The Best Developmentally-Appropriate Curriculum and Activities

Suncoast Academy provides a stimulating and safe environment for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years.  We focus on the development of children’s problem-solving and reactive thinking skills through staff and child directed activities in our daily agenda.  Our Preschool and PreK programs are designed to encourage learning through play and kindergarten readiness.  Infants and toddlers are cared for in a cozy, safe, age appropriate environment.

Since 1977 we have provided top-notch child care and preschool programs to our families.  We have an excellent licensing track record and are committed to the safety, health and happiness of every child in our care.  Our teachers are trained, experienced and, most importantly, they love and feel honored to care for children.

6 Weeks - 12 Months: Our Infant classroom is a child-led, soothing environment. We feed, change and cuddle them to sleep based on their needs. In addition to these essentials, we sing songs, listen to soft music, read stories, play in our large (indoor) infant playground, and monitor and record developmental milestones. Daily communication is provided to parents about their child's day.

3 - 4 Years: For the Preschoolers, our goal is to guide and facilitate the learning process by presenting developmentally appropriate materials and activities.  Our teachers care about the progress of each child in each area of growth so that individual differences in ability and interest are personally respected.  Enhancement of the child’s self-esteem and positive feelings toward learning are of paramount importance.

1 - 2 Years: Our Toddler classroom is a happy, nurturing environment where each child is encouraged to explore and develop new skills at their own pace. Equipment and toys are safe and age appropriate for these early walkers. The room arrangement and indoor playground satisfies individual needs by allowing space for eating, sleeping, playing and socializing.

4 - 5 Years: Our Pre-K/VPK program pairs your child's natural talents and curiosity with skilled teachers who will help them to be all they can be.  There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing a child's face light up when they learn something new and exciting.  The look in their eyes, the smile on their face, this is why our Pre-K program exists.  Early reading and math skills, science and nature concepts, artistic and creative expression are just a few of the things we love to teach.

2 - 3 Years: In our Early Preschool classroom children combine learning with play.  Curriculum concepts are taught at an introductory level with plenty of flexibility for shorter attention spans.  Projects are fun and messy, yet still meaningful.  Children are encouraged to explore their environment freely and discover the joy of learning.

K - 6th: Parents know that the importance of reliable care and supervision does not end when a child goes to elementary school.  Our School Age program provides a safe, friendly environment for school age children after school, during school breaks and on school closure days.  We offer activities and space to facilitate healthy physical, mental, social, and emotional development along with healthy snack options for these hungry kiddos.

Our Philosophy

Since 1977, Suncoast Academy has been providing stellar infant and child care in the Tampa Bay area.  With over 40 years in childcare and early learning, we pride ourselves in furthering the development of your child’s educational, mental and physical wellbeing. Within our caring and trusting environment, our tenured teachers and qualified staff will enrich your child’s early years with the utmost care and concern, creating a positive foundation to grow.  Since we believe the first years in life are extremely important in influencing a child’s development, we have built our philosophy around understanding the individual needs of the child in order to provide fun, yet effective solutions to help a child acquire the confidence in handling people, situations and comprehending feelings.

Everything we do begins with what a child needs to grow and develop in a safe, caring environment.  What a child sees, smells, tastes, touches, and hears affects how he/she will feel and behave.  Our welcoming, stimulating and organized setting will make a positive impact on your child for years to come. What Parents Think

our team

Qualified Staff Members

It takes a special kind of person to be part of the Suncoast Academy family.

We recognize the importance of the role of a teacher; his/her training, natural abilities and personality are crucial in setting the stage for learning.  By the experiences that a teacher makes possible for children, and by his/her knowledge of child development and how children learn, he/she will be able to turn the classroom into a “mini lab” where children can discover themselves and the world around them.  A teacher’s goal is to be an enthusiastic listener and create an inspirational environment where children can learn, grow and develop into exceptional adults.

We hire the most qualified and experienced child care professionals possible.  Every staff member has had a thorough background check and has completed or is in the process of fulfilling the 40-hour child care training credential.  Each lead teacher in every preschool classroom has a CDA credential and all staff members have received the Infant/Child First Aid and CPR training.  Last but certainly not least, our amazing team LOVES children and teaching.

Meet Ms. Chris - Center Director

Over 40 years ago, Chris began working as a part-time teacher at Suncoast Academy.   She is now the owner of the center.  Although she still spends plenty of time in the classroom teaching the pre-kindergarten class, she says the best part of her job is fostering a love of education in her students.  Chris’ childcare certifications include: 40 Hour Child Care Training, Florida Child Care Professional, Child Care Director, as well as Infant/Child CPR and First Aid.

Take one look at her office and you will be able to tell that Chris loves sea life.  That is because outside of Suncoast, her favorite place to be is the ocean.  Chris is a certified dive master and loves spending time in the water whenever she can.

As a lifetime resident of Tampa, she is a Buccaneers fan (even through the rough spots).  And because of her granddaughter’s love for softball, she is also a fan of Palma Ceia Little League Softball and Revolution Softball Travel Team.  Chris spends most of her weekends watching her granddaughter, as well as several past students of Suncoast, play ball.

Curriculum

At Suncoast Academy, your little bundle of joy is our top priority. Just because a child may be an infant or toddler, doesn’t mean he/she gets left out of the learning curve. At this center, we utilize Frog Street as our curriculum of choice for infants, toddlers, and two year olds. Using a theme-based approach, each developmentally appropriate activity involves: Language, Cognitive skills, Gross motor, Fine motor, Self-help, and Social emotional skills. The curriculum is based on multiple objectives for development and learning, which are fully aligned with the School Readiness Goals for Infants and Toddlers and early learning standards for our state. Our curriculum also offer daily opportunities for our teachers to use assessment information to individualize routines and experiences for our young children. The curriculum also offers complete support in our classrooms where children are learning English, Spanish and Sign Language.

If your child is 4-years old on or before September 1 of the current school year, he or she may benefit greatly from the FREE Pre- K4 VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) program. The Pre-K4 VPK is a statewide program that encompasses a whole different level of learning. During a school year, children receive over 540 instructional hours to prepare for kindergarten. Our VPK program focuses on building early literary skills, which include: Language, Math, Science, Social studies, Fine arts, Health and safety, Personal/physical development, and Technology. Also, our VPK level utilizes the Pinnacle Curriculum, which contains strategies to ensure social/emotional development which fulfill the character development requirements of the School Readiness Program. The curriculum also includes an assessment in each subject that assists educators as well as parents with knowing what the next step toward development is on each individual child’s lesson plan.
