What Your Child Should Learn at a Tampa Preschool to be Ready for Kindergarten

tampa preschoolWhen you choose a Tampa preschool for your child, look for one that offers a comprehensive kindergarten readiness program. While your four-year-old needs time to play and just be a kid, he or she also needs to learn skills to help make the adjustment to school easier. Suncoast Academy is pleased to have recently earned a 100 kindergarten readiness score from the Florida Department of Education.

One of the reasons our preschool program earned the highest possible score is because of our strong commitment to early literacy. Kids enrolled in our Pre-K4 program receive 540 instructional hours in language, math, social studies, science, fine arts, personal health and safety, technology, and physical development. This background makes the transition to kindergarten much easier compared to children who don’t attend preschool.

What Specific Skills Does a Kindergartener Need?

You know your child and are the best person to decide if he or she is ready for kindergarten. The year before official school enrollment is the ideal time to begin preparing your son or daughter for a lifetime of learning. According to the website Family Education, you should watch for and encourage the following skills before you enroll your son or daughter in kindergarten:

  • Count from 1 to 10
  • Use the bathroom independently
  • Separate easily from parents
  • Cut basic shapes from paper using scissors
  • Have the ability to sit still and take directions from a teacher for several minutes at a time
  • Identify several sounds, shapes, numbers, and colors
  • Understand the concept of sharing and be willing to share on occasion

This is just a small sampling of what kindergarten teachers expect from their new students.
